Welcome to my website. I’m a children’s author and I have written a series of books about a girl detective named Violet, which are published by Simon and Schuster.
I am also very proud and excited to announce that I have another series of books coming out soon, with Stripes Publishing, which are aimed at slightly older children than Violet. They are set in another world, and are rip roaring adventures featuring an acrobatic girl named Cass, who wants to run away with the Circus. The first book is called Company of Eight and should be out in May 2018.
Back to Violet – four books in the series are now published – Violet and the Pearl of the Orient, Violet and the Hidden Treasure, Violet and the Smugglers and Violet and the Mummy Mystery has just come out. The last book in the series, Violet and the Mystery of Tiger Island is all written and now being illustrated by the amazing Becka Moor, and will hopefully be out in August 2018.
The books have all been shortlisted for prizes – most recently, Violet and the Smugglers was shortlisted for the Best Crime Novel for Children Award at CrimeFest. Violet and the Hidden Treasure was shortlisted for the Sainsbury Prize and Violet and the Pearl of the the Orient was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2015, which was rather thrilling. Other nice things people have said about the books are –
-”Whitehorn’s debut is pacey and imaginative and Becka Moor’s illustrations a delight.” – Alex O’Connell, The Times Books of the Year 2014
“..a great heroine, an intriguing story and brilliant use of language.”
“absolutely beautifully published, it’s a gorgeous small hardback.” @Yayeahyeah
I’ve also had some great reviews on the wonderful site Toppsta- here’s the link- https://toppsta.com/books/details/violet-and-the-pearl-of-the-orient
I was also very excited to contribute a short story to the collection “Mystery and Mayhem” which came out in May 2016. it is full of wonderful stories and I hope you enjoy mine, “The Murder of Monsieur Pierre.”
I love visiting schools and my usual format is a creative writing workshop on detective stories. I make it as fun as possible with a worksheet and power point and the children will have the basis of a detective story at the end of it which can be taken forward either in school or on their own. In my experience it works best with Years 3 – 6.
